History of Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram also known as Tiruvandrum was once known as “Kingdom of Travancore” between 1729 and 1949. After the 17th century the city came into limelight though it has been trading site for spices, Sandalwood and Ivory in 10th century.

The British never directly controlled the city and it was a princely state. When India got freedom in 1947, Thiruvananthapuram was an independent country but when the political tension rose, it became part of India and finally became the capital of Kerala . In 1962 it also became the home for India’s Space programme, with launch sites and research centres.

The main food of people in Trivandrum is rice, Spices like pepper, cloves, ginger and tapioca. Other important thing about Tiruvandrum cuisine is coconut, they use coconut milk as the main ingredient to cook their food. Both vegetarian and non vegetarian food is loved here. Culture of Thiruvananthapuram

Many great poets from decades have lived here like Ayyapillai Asan (15 or 16 century C.E) who wrote famous Ramakhadhappatu, which represents the stage in evolution of the southern dialect of Malayalam. Other writers were Unnayi Warrior, Kunchan Nambier, Irayimman Thampi and many more.
