How To Reach Jammu and Kashmir

One of the major draws of coming to Jammu and Kashmir is the time spent on the road itself. High-altitude crossings like Zojila and Khardungla beckon adventurers from all corners of India. On the other hand, a flight to Leh or Srinagar allows spectacular panoramic views of the higher Himalayas. The state of Jammu and Kashmir is accessible by road, rail, and air. Travellers can easily book flights, trains, taxis, or buses to reach the northernmost state in India. The state has three major regions: Jammu, Kashmir Valley, and Ladakh.

Each region has at least one principal city where major modes of interstate transport are available for domestic and international visitors. So, if you are planning a holiday to the land of high passes and surreal beauty, here are the following means of transport to reach Jammu and Kashmir:

By Air

Srinagar International Airport (SXR), also known as Sheikh-ul-Alam Airport, and Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL) in Leh are the major airports in Jammu and Kashmir state. The airport in Srinagar is connected with major cities in India including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Bangalore. The airport in Leh has direct flights to and from Delhi, Mumbai, and Srinagar. Taxi rentals and private shuttles are available at both airports in Jammu and Kashmir.

Furthermore, Jammu Aiport or Jammu Civil Enclave handles domestic flights from major urban centres in India.

By Train

Jammu Tawi, located in the state’s winter capital, is the busiest railway station in Jammu and Kashmir. It serves as the northern terminal of major trains connecting the city with the rest of India. Regular express trains from Jammu to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Trivandrum run efficiently.

The picturesque section between Banihal and Baramulla of Jammu–Baramulla railway line passes through several towns in Kashmir Valley. It is an excellent alternative for those wanting to take the tracks not often taken.

By Road

Jammu and Srinagar, seasonal capitals of the state can be reached throughout the year by road. Jammu is served by a network of state and national highways. If you’re wondering about how to reach Kashmir Valley by road, follow the NH1(A) that passes through the city of Jammu to Srinagar in Kashmir Valley. The highway continues to the east before terminating at Leh in Ladakh region. NH1 is a major and vital highway which handles the primary traffic coming in and out of the region. Government and private operators run buses and taxis between Jammu, Srinagar, and Leh.

The Jawahar Tunnel, 2.8 kilometres in length, connects Jammu with Kashmir Valley. The 3,528-m-high mountain pass Zoji La carries the Srinagar-Leh highway extending into Ladakh. The 474-km-long Leh-Manali Highway is another major road with serving the Ladakh region. Both Srinagar-Leh and Leh-Manali highways remain vulnerable to weather conditions in winter as the snowfall blocks the road access.

Booked Kashmir trip through travel triangle. Emaar was the travel agency that arranged our trip. Everything went well finally so nothing to complain. Zainab was the trip agent assigned to us. She was very helpful and accommodating. She was connected with us through-out the trip to check how it

is going for us. There were some issues with hotel booking initially but that was sorted. Hotels that were initially selected and quoted for weren't available after a day. Luckily, alternate hotels offered turned out to be good except in Pahalgam. During peak tourist season, it's difficult to trust their words on hotels availability. Need to be a little careful before making advance payment. It was a good experience overall. I would recommend Emaar to anyone planning trip to Kashmir.

She give me over 7-8 different options, multiple hotel choices and she was very helpful in ensuring our needs were met while also suggesting her own improvements based on her local experience. The booking, quotes etc was very smooth. Janat reminded us on time to book the Gulmarg gondola's which are limited. Farah also from Hermosa then ensured our travel was smooth and everything was taken care of. During our trip, we rarely had to call Hermosa for anything as everything was arranged and planned really well. The driver (Iqbal) was amazing and flexible to our needs. He gave good suggestions and ensured we did not fall into the trap of guides or other tourist frenzies in each location. Overall the complete experience with Hermosa was amazing starting with booking, hotels, cab to the arrangements at the hotels as well.
