Palais Garnier, Paris (France)

Also referred to as the Paris Opera as well as the Salle des Capucines, the Palais Garnier opera house that can seat 1,979 people at one go. Famed to be one of the most popular opera houses of the world, the Palais Garnier in Paris is a popular tourist attraction even for those who do not like operatic music. The entire structure is decorated richly with beautiful statues by master sculptors. The statues include those of Beethoven, Mozart, Auber, Spontini and of several scenarios including dances, poetry in motion and other similar things. There is a huge grand staircase inside the Palais Garnier, which is a major tourist attraction, along with Grand Foyer that is home to a gilded dome and frescoes of angels singing and dancing. The ceiling was painted by Paul Jacques Aimé Baudry and is considered to be the artist’s masterpiece.

Grand Staircase: This marble made staircase has been inspired by the works of Victor Loius. This staircase is the highlight of Palais Garnier is the design and architecture of this is eccentric made from luxurious marbles from different countries like France, Sweden, and Italy with intricate work done using precious stones.

Chandelier: Made from crystals and bronze, this Chandelier is one of the most iconic features of the Palais Garnier. There is a sad story attached to it as the breaking of the counterweight of this chandelier led to the death of one of the guest members.

Grand Foyer: The Grand Foyer is designed fully using intricate patterns and mosaics. The Foyer is 154 meters in height and is supported by two fireplaces and fresco which was painted in the year 1874 by Paul Baudry.

Rotundas: Rotundas is a gallery for the VIP and the most elite guests of Paris. The guests were given VIP treatment along with well-decorated rooms.

Famous Events at Palais Garnier

Leon, Lightfoot/Van Manen: The show is performed by choreographers of a leading modern dance company called Nederlands Dance Theater. A couple in reel and real life, Sol Leon and Paul Lightfoot perform their two best dances called Sleight of Hand and Speak for Yourself.

Iolanta /Casse-Noisette: Two of the masterpieces of Tchaikovsky’s, Iolanta and the ballet The Nutcracker are performed at Palais Garnier to show the audience that how two different pieces can compliment each other. The programme also features dance forms by great choreographers like Arthur Pita, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, etc.

Inside Opera: In this show, the players try to solve various riddles to free the musicians from the curse of Opera’s Phantom. Mozart’s Magic Flute performance is another highlight of this show.

The main auditorium is shaped like a horseshoe, with all the seats facing the stage so that everybody is able to get a good view of the artists on the stage. The stage, in fact, is the largest of similar stages in all of Europe and can actually accommodate nearly 450 artists on it at the same time. Visiting the Palais Garnier is an experience in itself, and is a must for music lovers from all over the world, if not for a show then at least for a look at where some of the greatest musicians of the world have played.
