Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur (Rajasthan)

Towering over the city of Jodhpur and the reason that Jodhpur flourished as it did throughout history, Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur is the impregnable fortress of the Rathore clan built by Rao Jodha around the 1460s.

Mehrangarh Fort History

One year after the accession of Rao Jodha – the 15th Rathore ruler – the Mehrangarh fort was built to establish a new capital of Marwar Kingdom. Before Jodhpur, The old fort at Mandore was the capital of the Marwar rulers. The biggest attraction in Jodhpur, this magnificent fort is hard to miss as it is situated on a high hill and is spread over 5 kilometres. Mehrangarh fort invokes an image of the strength and splendor of the Rajput kings of the past and their indomitable will.

Mehrangarh Fort Architecture

Built in Rajputana style, the fort is located in the heart of Jodhpur and it is perched on the top of a hill. Its walls are up to 36 metres in height and 21 metres in width, making it one of the most beautiful forts in Rajasthan. There are seven gates to enter the Mehrangarh Fort including Jai Pol, Fateh Pol, and Lodha Pol.

Today, visiting Mehrangarh fort gives tourists an in-depth idea of these important parts of Jodhpur’s history and impeccable insight into the sordid histories of the area. Apart from that, merely wandering through the giant fort and observing and appreciating the beautiful architecture is an experience that must be had when visiting the wonderful city of Jodhpur.

The Jodhpur Mehrangarh kila is one of the finest forts in the entire country of India as its imposing structure, interesting architecture and compelling history lends it a unique aura that cannot be found elsewhere. Mehrangarh fort is one of the only forts that has still stayed in the possession of the clan that built it and ruled it as their own. As such, it is still well maintained, providing tourists with a lot of things to see and observe.

Mehrangarh houses within itself one of the finest museum collections in Rajasthan, giving travellers the opportunity to marvel at the bounties of the past. Mehrangarh fort entry fees are non-existent, with a ticket only needed for visiting the museum. Walking through the fort itself is open for all visitors. The best time to visit MehranFort fort, Jodhpur is the winter if you want to stay long and explore it thoroughly but there is also a case to be made for the summer when there are not many tourists around.

Attractions of Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh Fort stands beautifully on a rocky cliff which is about 150 m high. The fort looks magnificently beautiful when the sun rays fall on it. The most striking feature of this fort is its seven gate entrances, out of which the gate of victory (Jai Pol) is the most prominent one. There are various palaces inside the fort which speaks for themselves because of the intricate carvings and royal design. The Phool Mahal is a major attraction here because of its gold ceilings. Other than this, Moti Mahal, Rang Mahal, and Sheesh Mahal are other important and beautiful palaces inside the fort. Mansions like Ajit Villa, Maan Villa, and Umaid Villa are famous for their intricate ceilings, paintings, musical instruments, and other royal antiques. A part of the fort has been converted into the museum which has all the royal and vintage things.

There is no light and sound show performed at Mehrangarh Fort at present. However, if you're visiting Jodhpur in February, make sure to attend Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF), which is organized against the majestic backdrop of Mehrangarh Fort.

Hemant's 4 days trip to Jodhpur

We had a wonderful experience booking our *Udaipur–Chittorgarh–Pushkar–Jaipur (Rajasthan Mewar)* trip through Aapka TripWala via Travel Triangle. Chirag from the tour company was extremely helpful from the very beginning. He carefully understood our requirements, as we were travelling with our 3-year-old, and tailored the itinerary perfectly for us. He also arranged our flight tickets and hotel bookings with ease. The hotels chosen for us were exceptional in comfort, location, and service, making our stay truly memorable. Our driver, *Mr. Nandu Singh*, made the journey stress-free and pleasant from the moment he picked us up at the airport until the final drop-off. He kept us informed about possible scams at tourist spots, was always patient and courteous (even when delays happened because of our little one), and greeted us each day with a warm smile. We really appreciated that he never pushed us toward any particular shop or market. Travelling with him was an absolute delight, and his professionalism enhanced our overall trip experience. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a well-organized, trustworthy, and family-friendly travel experiene.

Binoy's 4 days trip to Jodhpur

We are really grateful to Preeti Sharma from Back 2 Holidays for planning such a wonderful trip of Udaipur and Mount Abu. Initially we were sceptical about all the commitments given by Preeti, but to our complete surprise, everything what she has promised was honoured. Right from the hotel room, view, the cab, the tour plan was as committed. We are super delighted as it was my bday tour and wanted this to be special and would like to thank Preeti Sharma , the cab driver Kamlesh , who ensure we had the best experience of the lake city and Mt. Abu. Breathing Taking Hotel View, Dinner at Kamma Ghani , City palace and Mt. Abu Morning.

Devyani's 7 days trip to Jodhpur

We had a memorable trip to Rajasthan booked through Travel Triangle, though our experience was somewhat mixed. The cab driver assigned to us was truly dedicated and went above and beyond to ensure our comfort. Every restaurant he recommended was excellent, and the sightseeing throughout the journey was absolutely fabulous. That said, I would advise exercising caution when booking 4-star accommodations through the agent. It's important to clarify that we were referring to official hotel ratings, not guest reviews. Unfortunately, the agent’s interpretation did not match ours. Three out of the five hotels had ongoing renovation work, which significantly affected our comfort. Although the agent did try to make changes to minimize the inconvenience, the replacement hotels were not of genuine 4-star quality either. The most disappointing experience was the camping stay at Juma Resort in Jaisalmer. The property was infested with crickets, making it uninhabitable. Four families, including ours, ended up leaving the resort and paying out of pocket for alternative accommodation. Unfortunately, this was not even communicated to the travel agent at the time. On a positive note, our request for a rollaway bed for our daughter was fulfilled as expected, which we appreciated. In summary, while the itinerary and driver exceeded our expectations, the hotel arrangements — particularly the Jaisalmer experience — left considerable room for improvement.
